Jami Eng
Azja   (Polish Lowland Sheepdog)
Pairing her love for running and her passion for animals, Jami founded Austin Dog Runners. Growing up with lots of pets - including a skunk and a family of tarantulas - exposed Jami to multitudes of animal characteristics and personalities. After running her first marathon 13 years ago, she realized that a 4-legged buddy would be the perfect running partner. She furthers her hands on training by actively volunteering at the Austin Humane Society as a dog handler where she assists in training dogs of different sizes and breeds. She also volunteers frequently at marathons and triathlons. Jami is a long time resident of Austin and has graduate and undergraduate degrees from UT Austin and Texas State University. Jami knew she wanted a high-energy dog as a running companion, so getting a herding dog was a natural choice. During Azja's routine 12 week puppy checkup, Jami became increasingly nervous when unusual sounds of blood rushing obscured Azja's heart beat. Radiographs and echocardiograms confirmed her vet's suspicions. Azja had a hole in her heart. Only 3 ½ months old, Azja underwent open-heart surgery at Texas A&M Veterinary Teaching Hospital. You'd never know it to meet her now. Her passions include fetching, swimming, running, and . . . herding. Bored with sheep, she has switched to kids, who unknowingly encourage her herding instincts by laughing and running from her.
